African Grey Parrot in Uganda — Where to See It
The African grey parrot is one of the world's most iconic and intelligent birds. In Uganda, wild African grey parrots can be seen in several forest and forest-edge locations, making Uganda one of the best countries in East Africa to observe this species in the wild.
Best Sites in Uganda
African grey parrots are most reliably seen at Entebbe Botanical Gardens where small groups feed in fruiting trees in the morning. Kibale National Park also holds a resident population visible at forest edges and along the main trail. Semuliki National Park in western Uganda is another excellent site, particularly at dusk when groups roost communally in tall forest trees. Occasional sightings occur in Bwindi and around Lake Victoria islands.
Behaviour and Viewing Tips
African grey parrots are most active in the early morning (6:00 to 9:00am) when they fly between feeding trees in small flocks. They are noisy in flight — a harsh, rolling call announces their presence. When feeding silently in a fruiting tree they can be surprisingly difficult to spot despite their large size. Look for the distinctive red tail flash when birds take flight. In Uganda, birds tend to be the Congo grey subspecies (P. e. erithacus) with the characteristic red tail.
Conservation Note
The African grey parrot is classified as Endangered due to severe population declines from the wild bird trade. Responsible birding at managed sites contributes to local conservation awareness. Contact us to include African grey parrot viewing in your Uganda birding tour.
