Best Time to Visit Uganda for Birding: Month-by-Month Guide

Best Time to Visit Uganda for Birding

Uganda is a year-round birding destination — the equatorial climate means birds are always present and active. However, different seasons bring different advantages, from easier road conditions in the dry season to the arrival of Palearctic migrants in the wet season. This month-by-month guide helps you choose the best time for your Uganda birding tour.

Dry Seasons (December-February and June-August)

Uganda's dry seasons offer the best road conditions for accessing remote sites like Kidepo Valley, the best game viewing as animals gather at water sources, and comfortable temperatures for all-day birding. Bwindi's forest trails are drier and easier to navigate. The shoebill stork can be seen year-round at Mabamba and is equally reliable in all months. Dry season bird totals are often slightly lower as vegetation is less lush.

Wet Seasons (March-May and September-November)

The wet seasons bring spectacular advantages for birders: Palearctic migrant waders, terns and raptors arrive in large numbers. Breeding plumage on resident species makes identification and photography more rewarding. Forest understorey birds are more vocal and active. The landscape is lush and green — ideal for photography. Green-breasted pitta and African pitta are most reliably found in Kibale during the wet season.

Month-by-Month Highlights

January-February: Dry, great for northern Uganda (Murchison, Kidepo), Palearctic migrants still present. March-May: Long rains, pittas active in Kibale, migrants arriving and departing, lush light for photography. June-August: Short dry season, excellent gorilla trekking conditions in Bwindi, good for all sites. September-November: Short rains, migrant waders peak, breeding activity in many forest species. December: Dry season beginning, excellent overall conditions across all sites.
