Mabamba Swamp — Uganda's Best Shoebill Stork Site
Mabamba Swamp on the northern shore of Lake Victoria is the world's most reliable site for the shoebill stork. This vast papyrus wetland, located just 45 minutes from Entebbe Airport, is the first destination on every Uganda birding itinerary. Guided canoe sessions through the papyrus channels deliver close, extended views of the shoebill in its natural hunting habitat.
The Shoebill at Mabamba
The shoebill stork hunts in the shallow edges of papyrus channels where lungfish surface to breathe. It stands motionless for long periods before striking with lightning speed. At Mabamba, experienced local canoe guides know the territories of individual shoebills and can position the canoe within 15 to 25 metres for photography. Sighting rates exceed 95% on guided tours.
Other Species at Mabamba
Beyond the shoebill, Mabamba holds an excellent supporting cast of wetland birds: papyrus gonolek, white-winged warbler, lesser swamp warbler, papyrus canary, African jacana, blue-breasted bee-eater, malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, African pygmy goose, long-tailed cormorant, grey-backed heron and sitatunga antelope. Expect 40 to 60 species during a half-day visit.
How to Visit
Mabamba is accessible by road from Entebbe (45 minutes) or Kampala (90 minutes). We recommend departing by 6am for the best shoebill activity. Tours can be booked as standalone day trips or as part of a longer Uganda birding itinerary. Contact us to arrange your Mabamba canoe tour.
