Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala – Mabamba Swamp – Return

Your day begins early at 5am, well before sunrise, with pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. You drive roughly 45 minutes to the shores of Mabamba Bay, on the northern edge of Lake Victoria, arriving just as the swamp is waking up.

You board a traditional dugout canoe with a local poler and your guide, and slip quietly into the papyrus channels. This is the best time of day to find the Shoebill — the towering, prehistoric-looking stork hunts in the shallows during the first hours after sunrise. Along the way you'll pick up African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Papyrus Gonolek, and if you're lucky, a Sitatunga antelope moving through the reeds.

After roughly three hours on the water, you return to the landing site for tea and a light breakfast. Depending on time, you may stop at the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or the Lake Victoria shoreline before being dropped back at your hotel or the airport by early afternoon.
