Kidepo Valley National Park Birding
Kidepo Valley National Park in northeastern Uganda is one of Africa's most remote and rewarding birding destinations. With 475 bird species including many Abyssinian zone specialities found nowhere else in Uganda, Kidepo is the essential addition to any serious Uganda big bird itinerary.
Abyssinian Zone Specialities
Kidepo's position at the junction of the East African savannah and Abyssinian zone brings a unique set of species. Target birds found only at Kidepo within Uganda include Abyssinian roller, Abyssinian scimitarbill, black-breasted barbet, fox kestrel, Karamoja apalis, white-crested turaco, ostrich and Jackson's hornbill. The open Narus Valley is outstanding for raptors including martial eagle, long-crested eagle, bateleur and tawny eagle.
Remote Wilderness Experience
Kidepo receives few visitors and the birding is wonderfully unhurried. Game is abundant and largely undisturbed — lions, cheetahs, elephants and buffaloes are regularly encountered on game drives. The combination of exceptional wildlife and rare birds in a completely wild setting makes Kidepo one of Uganda's most memorable destinations.
Getting to Kidepo
Kidepo is 10 hours by road from Kampala or accessible by scheduled charter flight from Entebbe (approximately 1.5 hours). We recommend combining Kidepo with Murchison Falls on the return route for a comprehensive northern Uganda birding circuit. Contact us to add Kidepo to your Uganda birding itinerary.
