Murchison Falls Bird Checklist: 450+ Species

Murchison Falls National Park Bird Checklist

Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda holds over 450 confirmed bird species across its diverse habitats — savannah, riverine forest, Nile delta wetlands and acacia woodland. This makes it one of the largest single-park species lists in Uganda and an essential destination for any serious Uganda birding itinerary.

Shoebill and Waterbirds (Nile Delta Boat Trip)

The boat trip to the Nile Delta at the northern end of Lake Albert is the park's premier birding experience. Key species include shoebill stork, goliath heron, African skimmer, pink-backed pelican, yellow-billed stork, African open-bill, saddle-billed stork, African spoonbill, various egrets and herons, African fish eagle, martial eagle, long-crested eagle, pied kingfisher, giant kingfisher, malachite kingfisher and 12+ wader species.

Savannah Game Drive Species

North bank game drives deliver Abyssinian ground hornbill (reliable at dawn), northern carmine bee-eater (at colonial nest sites, July-September), red-throated bee-eater, black-headed plover, African wattled lapwing, Denham's bustard, grey-breasted spurfowl, standard-winged nightjar (at dusk, June-September) and an excellent range of raptors including bateleur, Wahlberg's eagle and African hawk-eagle.

Riverside and Forest Species

The riverine forest along the Victoria Nile holds African grey hornbill, grey woodpecker, brown-backed woodpecker, little green bee-eater, white-throated bee-eater, red-chested cuckoo, African cuckoo and numerous forest warblers and flycatchers. The falls viewpoint area is excellent for white-headed saw-wing and Alpine swift. Allow 3 nights minimum to do Murchison's birding justice.
