Bwindi Sectors for Birding: Buhoma vs Ruhija vs Rushaga
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four main sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo — each offering different birding opportunities, terrain and species emphasis. Choosing the right sector (or combining two) is key to maximising your Albertine Rift endemic list at Bwindi.
Ruhija — The Best Sector for Birding
Ruhija in the northeast corner of Bwindi is the premier birding sector and the most important for Albertine Rift endemics. The Mubwindi Swamp trail at Ruhija is the single best trail for African green broadbill and Grauer's swamp warbler in Uganda. The higher altitude (around 2,400 metres) at Ruhija adds montane species not found in other sectors. Most serious birders prioritise at least 2 nights at Ruhija.
Buhoma — Most Accessible
Buhoma is Bwindi's main tourism hub with the best accommodation options and most established trail system. It is excellent for general forest birding with good numbers of Albertine endemics, but the species list overlaps less with the highest-value targets than Ruhija. Buhoma is the best choice for combining gorilla trekking with birding in a comfortable setting.
Rushaga and Nkuringo
Rushaga in the south is primarily a gorilla trekking sector but the surrounding forest and community areas add several species less common in the northern sectors. Nkuringo's high ridge forest offers excellent views into Bwindi's canopy and some different understorey species. For most birders, Ruhija plus Buhoma is the optimal combination.
