Entebbe Botanical Gardens Birding Guide

Entebbe Botanical Gardens Birding Guide

The Entebbe Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria is Uganda's most accessible birding site and delivers remarkable species diversity in a compact, relaxed setting. Just 10 minutes from Entebbe Airport, it is ideal for arrival and departure day birding and can produce 100+ species in a 3-hour visit.

Forest Species

The mature forest trees in the gardens hold: great blue turaco (common — often at close range in canopy), African grey parrot (small groups in fruiting trees, early morning), African harrier hawk, grey-backed fiscal, paradise flycatcher, yellow-rumped tinkerbird, black-and-white-casqued hornbill, African pygmy kingfisher, blue-breasted kingfisher, sunbird species (variable) and a good diversity of woodland warblers and flycatchers.

Lakeside Birding

The Lake Victoria shoreline within the gardens adds waterbird species: African fish eagle, long-tailed cormorant, African darter, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher, African jacana, African pygmy goose, spur-winged goose, knob-billed duck, various herons and egrets, grey crowned crane and several wader species during migration. The lake edge at dawn is often spectacular.

Visiting Information

Open daily 8:00am to 6:00pm. Entrance fee applies (approximately USD 5). Morning visits (7:00 to 10:00am) are most productive. A self-guided walk is possible but a local guide dramatically increases species count. We include the botanical gardens in all itineraries arriving or departing via Entebbe.
