Kingfisher Species in Uganda: 8 Spectacular Species

Kingfisher Species in Uganda: 8 Spectacular Species

Uganda holds 8 kingfisher species — from the jewel-like malachite kingfisher perching over papyrus channels to the giant kingfisher diving from riverside branches into the Nile. Seeing all 8 kingfisher species on a single Uganda birding tour is an achievable goal that adds a satisfying challenge to any itinerary.

The 8 Uganda Kingfishers

1. Malachite kingfisher: Common and often photographed at Mabamba and along all rivers. 2. African pygmy kingfisher: Forest streams and gardens throughout Uganda. 3. Shining-blue kingfisher: Kibale and Semuliki forest streams. 4. Blue-breasted kingfisher: Kibale and Bwindi forest canopy. 5. Woodland kingfisher: Noisy and common in savannah woodland. 6. Grey-headed kingfisher: Dry woodland, Murchison and Kidepo. 7. Pied kingfisher: Abundant on all water bodies — hovering hunter. 8. Giant kingfisher: Nile banks at Murchison, Kazinga Channel — Uganda's largest kingfisher.

Most Difficult: Shining-Blue Kingfisher

The shining-blue kingfisher is the most difficult of Uganda's 8 species to see — it perches motionless in dense forest understorey near forest streams and is easily overlooked. Kibale Forest's stream crossings and Semuliki National Park are the best Uganda sites. An experienced local guide who knows stream territories is essential for reliable views.

Where to Complete the Set

A 7-day tour covering Mabamba, Kibale and Murchison Falls normally produces 6 of the 8 species. The complete set of 8 requires adding either Semuliki (for shining-blue) or specific woodland habitats for grey-headed kingfisher. Our 10-day and 14-day tours are designed to include all 8 kingfisher sites. Contact us to target the complete Uganda kingfisher list.
