What to Pack for a Uganda Birding Tour

Packing correctly for a Uganda birding tour makes a significant difference to your comfort and species count. Uganda's diverse habitats — from equatorial forest to open savannah to papyrus wetland — require versatile clothing and gear. This packing list covers everything you need for a 7 to 14-day Uganda birding safari.

Clothing

Neutral colours only — khaki, olive, grey, brown. Avoid white, bright colours or camouflage patterns (illegal in some areas). Bring lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers for forest birding (sun and insect protection), a fleece or light jacket for early mornings in western Uganda highlands (can be cool at altitude), a waterproof jacket for sudden tropical showers, and a wide-brimmed hat for savannah game drives. Comfortable walking shoes or trail boots for forest trails — waterproof boots for Bwindi's muddy trails.

Optics and Camera Gear

Binoculars: 8x42 or 10x42 are the best all-round choice for Uganda birding — good field of view for canopy species plus enough magnification for distant savannah birds. Spotting scope: useful for boat trips and savannah drives but not essential. Camera: DSLR or mirrorless with a minimum 400mm lens for birds. For canoe work, bring a waterproof bag for your camera gear. A bean bag is useful for vehicle-based photography.

Health and Practical Items

Malaria prophylaxis (start before departure), insect repellent (DEET-based), sunscreen, personal medications, hand sanitiser, water bottle (refillable — we provide bottled water), headtorch for pre-dawn starts, field guides (Birds of East Africa by Stevenson and Fanshawe is the standard reference), a notebook for field notes and a dry bag for electronics on boat trips.
