Sunbirds of Uganda: 40+ Iridescent Species
Uganda holds over 40 sunbird species — Africa's answer to hummingbirds. These tiny, iridescent birds with long curved bills are among the most beautiful in Uganda's avifauna. From the brilliant regal sunbird of the Rwenzori forest to the common bronze sunbird in Kampala gardens, sunbirds add a dazzling dimension to any Uganda birding tour.
Albertine Rift Endemic Sunbirds
Uganda's Albertine Rift forests hold several endemic sunbird species: regal sunbird (Rwenzori and Bwindi forest canopy — vivid crimson, yellow and green), Rwenzori double-collared sunbird (montane forest at altitude), blue-headed sunbird (Bwindi and Kibale forest canopy — brilliant blue head and yellow underparts), purple-breasted sunbird (Bwindi forest interior). These four endemics are major targets on any Albertine Rift birding tour.
Common and Widespread Species
Bronze sunbird: Common in gardens and forest edges throughout Uganda. Scarlet-chested sunbird: Gardens and savannah. Variable sunbird: One of Uganda's most common species. Olive sunbird: Forest understorey throughout western Uganda. Collared sunbird: Widespread in forest and scrub. Eastern double-collared sunbird: Gardens and highland scrub. Green-headed sunbird: Western Uganda forest canopy. Shining sunbird: Northern Uganda savannah.
