Best Bird Apps for Birding in Uganda

The right birding apps make a significant difference to your Uganda birding experience — helping with identification, call recognition, species tracking and finding productive sites. Here are the essential apps to install before your Uganda birding tour.

eBird (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

eBird is the essential Uganda birding tool. Download the Uganda offline map and checklist data before arrival — cell data coverage is limited in remote parks like Kidepo and parts of Murchison. Use eBird to browse recent sightings at Mabamba, Kibale and other key sites, and to submit your own checklists to contribute to Uganda's citizen science database. The Explore Hotspots function shows the most productive Uganda birding locations ranked by species count.

Merlin Bird ID

Merlin's Sound ID function is revolutionary for Uganda forest birding — hold the phone up in Kibale or Bwindi and it identifies species by call in real time. Download the Africa South of the Sahara sound pack for offline use. Merlin is particularly useful for warblers, flycatchers and other small forest species that are heard before seen. Note that it works best in open habitats — complex forest soundscapes can confuse it.

Field Guide Apps

Roberts Birds of Southern Africa (app version) is useful for species shared with southern Africa. The Collins Bird Guide app covers East Africa well. For Uganda-specific content, the printed Birds of East Africa by Stevenson and Fanshawe remains the gold standard reference — no app fully replaces it for the specific Uganda context. Download Xeno-canto for access to 500,000+ bird call recordings including all Uganda species.
