Entry Requirements for Uganda
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. The Uganda e-Visa system processes applications online within three to five business days and issues a single-entry tourist visa valid for 90 days. East African Tourist Visa holders may also enter Uganda as part of a multi-country itinerary covering Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda on a single visa — excellent value for birders combining these three countries. Citizens of several African nations and some Commonwealth countries enter visa-free; check your nationality's status before applying.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry to Uganda without exception. Travellers arriving without documentary proof of yellow fever vaccination may be vaccinated at the port of entry at their own expense, or refused boarding at their country of departure. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and is valid for life under current WHO guidelines. Carry the original certificate — a photograph on your phone is not accepted at all Ugandan entry points.
Malaria Prevention
Uganda is a high malaria transmission country. Antimalarial medication is strongly recommended for all visitors regardless of duration or season of travel. Commonly prescribed options include atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline, and mefloquine; consult a travel health clinic at least four to six weeks before departure. In addition to medication, use DEET-based insect repellent on exposed skin at dawn and dusk, sleep under permethrin-treated bed nets where provided, and wear long sleeves during early morning birding sessions in swamp habitats.
Travel Insurance and Medical Evacuation
Comprehensive travel insurance including emergency medical evacuation is essential for Uganda travel.
