Practical Information for Your Uganda Birding Tour

Planning a Uganda birding tour requires a few key preparations. This guide covers everything you need to know before you arrive — visas, vaccinations, best birding seasons, currency and what to expect in the field.

Visas

Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda visa on arrival or apply online at visas.immigration.go.ug before travel. A single-entry visa costs USD 50. East African Tourist Visas (covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda) cost USD 100 and are recommended for multi-country birding trips. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity from entry.

Vaccinations and Health

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Uganda. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all birding areas. Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus vaccinations are advised. Bring personal medications including antihistamines (useful in the field), sunscreen and insect repellent. Carry a small first aid kit on all field days.

Best Birding Seasons

Uganda's two dry seasons (December to February and June to August) offer the best road conditions and most comfortable field conditions. However, the wet seasons (March to May and September to November) bring migratory species and lush green habitats with excellent photographic light. The shoebill stork can be seen year-round at Mabamba Swamp and Murchison Falls.

Currency and Costs

Uganda's currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). USD cash is widely accepted at hotels and lodges. ATMs are available in Kampala and Entebbe. Carry small USD denominations for tips and local markets. Our tour prices are quoted in USD and include all park entry fees, guide fees, ground transport and meals unless otherwise stated.
