Queen Elizabeth National Park contains over 80 explosion craters — volcanic depressions formed by gas explosions during the Pleistocene, now filled with water to varying levels forming a series of crater lakes of different sizes and water chemistries. These crater lakes are scattered through the Bushenyi district section of the park north of the Kazinga Channel and are collectively one of the most unusual geological landscapes in East Africa. The Flamingo Craters: Alkaline Specialists

Several of the Queen Elizabeth crater lakes have high alkalinity — their water chemistry is similar to the Katwe and Munyanyange soda lakes — and these alkaline craters attract the same alkaline specialists as the main soda lakes. The alkaline crater lakes of Queen Elizabeth are less well documented than Katwe and Munyanyange but are visited regularly by birders who take the crater lake game drive from the Mweya area. The alkaline craters hold the Kittlitz's plover at the exposed mud margins, the lesser flamingo during the flamingo season, and the Egyptian goose in pairs on the crater rim. The contrast between the alkaline craters (pale, reflective water with sparse vegetation at the margin) and the fresh-water craters (dark water with thick papyrus and floating vegetation) creates a visual diversity on the crater lake circuit that no other part of the park approaches.

The Fresh-Water Craters: Papyrus and Forest Edge Species

The fresh-water crater lakes of Queen Elizabeth have thick papyrus margins and some have secondary forest on their steep crater walls — the most enclosed and vegetated of these fresh-water craters create a microhabitat that is distinctly different from the open savannah and channel of the main park. The fresh-water crater bird community: the African reed warbler (in the papyrus at the fresh-water crater margins), the little grebe (on the open water), the African jacana (at the floating vegetation at the crater water edge), and the grey-crowned crane (visiting the fresh-water craters from the adjacent grassland). The steep wooded crater walls of the most enclosed craters hold the African goshawk (nesting in the crater wall trees — the enclosed habitat provides undisturbed nesting conditions not available on the open savannah) and the black-headed gonolek (calling from the crater wall scrub). The walk around the rim of a well-vegetated fresh-water crater takes 45 minutes and produces 30 to 50 species not typically found on the standard Mweya area game drive.

The Crater Lake Circuit: Practical Route and Timing

The Queen Elizabeth crater lake circuit is accessible by vehicle on the game drive road network north of the Kazinga Channel — the craters are concentrated in the area between the Mweya peninsula and the northern Bushenyi sector, accessible on a 3-hour game drive loop. The circuit visits 6 to 10 individual craters depending on the route taken by the driver and guide. The best crater lake circuit timing is the early morning (departing Mweya at 6:00am, covering the craters from 7:00am to 10:00am) for the papyrus species activity and the flamingo scan, then returning to Mweya for the mid-morning rest before the afternoon boat trip. The crater lake circuit can also be combined with the soda lake visit at Katwe and Munyanyange in a single morning by departing earlier — the two-site morning requires a 5:30am departure from Mweya and returns by 11:00am. The crater lake circuit is rarely offered as a standard Queen Elizabeth game drive element by generalist tour operators, but specialist birding tours include it as a routine programme addition.

Birds Unique to the Queen Elizabeth Crater Lakes

Several bird species in the Queen Elizabeth park complex are significantly more reliably found at the crater lakes than at the main Kazinga Channel or the Mweya savannah. The white-winged warbler (a papyrus specialist that prefers enclosed papyrus channels over the open lake-edge papyrus) is most reliably found at the fresh-water craters with continuous papyrus margins rather than at the Kazinga Channel papyrus. The pygmy goose (a tiny, jewel-coloured goose of floating water vegetation) visits the fresh-water craters with floating vegetation — it is less common at the Kazinga Channel open water than in the quiet, sheltered crater lake surfaces. The Denham's bustard occasionally uses the open grassland at the crater lake rims as a displaying ground — the elevated, open positions of the crater rims provide the visibility the bustard requires for its spectacular lekking display, and this species is not reliably found elsewhere in the main park area. The crater lake-specific species, combined with the standard Mweya species, bring the Queen Elizabeth total for a thorough 2-night visit with the crater lake circuit to 180 to 220 species — significantly higher than the 140 to 160 species available on the standard programme without the crater lake addition.

The Crater Lake Circuit for Non-Birders: What the Rest of the Group Gets

The Queen Elizabeth crater lake circuit is a strong programme addition even for group members who are not primarily birders — the geological spectacle of 80 explosion craters clustered in a single visible landscape is one of the most dramatic landform experiences in East Africa. The Ndali-Kasenda crater field north of the park (visible on the approach road from Fort Portal) gives a preview of the crater density; within the park, the craters are at lower elevation and partially filled with coloured water that makes the volcanic geology visible. The alkaline craters have white or pale blue reflective surfaces; the fresh-water craters have dark green or brown water reflecting the papyrus margin. The contrast between these surface colours at the scale of dozens of craters in a single landscape is a memorable visual experience. The game associated with the crater circuit — the elephant herds moving between craters, the buffalo on the crater rims, the Uganda kob at the crater lake margins — adds the standard savannah wildlife experience to the geological interest, and the complete crater circuit has enough variety to hold the attention of any visitor for the full 3-hour duration, regardless of the bird list interest.

The Queen Elizabeth crater lake circuit is ideally combined with a morning departure from Mweya rather than the standard afternoon boat trip sequence. Visitors arriving at Mweya from Fort Portal or Bwindi in the afternoon of their first park day can use that first afternoon for the Kazinga Channel boat trip, then dedicate the full second morning to the crater lake circuit from 6:00am. This sequence gives the visitor both the Kazinga Channel waterbirds and the crater lake specialists within the standard 2-night Mweya package, without needing to add a day to the itinerary. The crater lake circuit roads can be driven independently by a skilled birder with their own 4x4, but the addition of a specialist guide from the Mweya area who knows which craters are currently holding which species improves the circuit considerably — the bird density at each crater varies seasonally and the guide will direct the visit to the most productive craters on the day rather than following the standard fixed route.
