A Five-Day Uganda Birding Trip Focused on Shoebill and Wetland Species
This five-day itinerary is designed for birders who want to maximise shoebill sightings and wetland species diversity without the longer overland drives required to reach Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth. It combines Mabamba Bay, Lake Victoria shoreline habitats, Entebbe Botanical Gardens, and a night at a lakeside lodge. Expect 250 to 300 species over five days including multiple shoebill encounters.
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe — Botanical Gardens Afternoon Walk
Afternoon arrivals at Entebbe International Airport are followed by a short transfer to your lakeside lodge. A late-afternoon walk through Entebbe Botanical Gardens delivers African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, purple-crested turaco, grey-backed cameroptera, and swamp flycatcher. The gardens fringe Lake Victoria and attract remarkable species diversity for so small an area.
Day 2: Mabamba Bay — Shoebill Canoe Excursion
Pre-dawn departure for Mabamba Bay. The canoe through narrow papyrus channels at sunrise is among the finest wetland birding experiences in Africa. Shoebills are resident and approachable here year-round. Supporting cast includes African jacana, malachite kingfisher, papyrus gonolek, white-winged warbler, and lesser jacana. Return to lodge for lunch; afternoon birding around Entebbe shoreline.
Days 3 and 4: Lake Victoria Islands and Shoreline Forests
A chartered boat takes you to nearby lake islands hosting African grey parrot, black-and-white shrike-flycatcher, Afep pigeon, and yellow-billed barbet. The lake shoreline forests add forest robins, sunbirds, and weavers. A second Mabamba canoe on Day 4 morning increases the chance of observing shoebill hunting behaviour at close range.
Day 5: Morning Birding — Transfer to Entebbe
Final morning birding around the lodge gardens before transferring back to Entebbe for departure flights. This itinerary suits birders with limited time or those combining Uganda birding with a broader East Africa itinerary.
