Where Shoebills Build Their Nests

The location of a shoebill nest is determined by two requirements: sufficient water depth beneath the platform to protect it from terrestrial predators (monitor lizards, water mongooses and servals that access papyrus margins at low water), and sufficient proximity to open hunting channels where the attending adult can catch large lungfish within 300 to 500 metres of the nest.

This ensures the nest platform remains surrounded by water even at the lowest seasonal levels in August and September. Nest Construction: What It Is Built From and How

The shoebill nest platform is built by both adults working together, typically over a period of 2 to 4 weeks in September to October before egg laying begins. The basic structure is a raft of trampled papyrus stems, aquatic grasses, Phragmites reeds and miscellaneous floating vegetation, pressed down and woven together into a dense, flat surface. As layers accumulate and compress, the platform develops a slight concave central depression — the egg cup — where the 1 to 2 eggs will sit.

The final platform typically measures 1.2 to 1.8 metres in diameter and 10 to 30 centimetres above the waterline. This is large enough for both adults to stand on simultaneously and stable enough to support the weight of two adults (totalling 8 to 14 kilograms) through the full incubation period. The edges of the platform are reinforced with additional material throughout the season as papyrus stems settle and the structure compresses under repeated adult weight.

Green, living papyrus vegetation is brought to the nest during incubation in addition to the dried structural material. This serves a thermoregulatory function: green papyrus evaporates moisture and keeps the nest surface slightly cooler than dried material in midday heat. In each October, the same pair repairs the existing platform rather than building a new one from scratch — adding new material to the edges, reinforcing the egg cup depression and removing decomposed material from the base.

This nest site fidelity has an important conservation implication. A shoebill nest territory is not just the bird — it is the specific location in the deep papyrus interior, the stable water level maintenance that keeps the platform floating, the surrounding papyrus stand that provides structural material and the channel system that provides prey access. Protecting a nest site effectively means protecting a specific area of papyrus swamp with specific hydrological characteristics. Drainage or burning of the papyrus, even outside the main canoe zone, can eliminate nest sites that the visible adult population has used for decades.

Nest Threats at Mabamba and Across Uganda

The most serious threat to shoebill nests at Mabamba is flooding above the nest platform — a rare but not impossible event during exceptionally wet seasons when water levels rise above the platform and drown eggs or newly hatched chicks. This risk has increased slightly as rainfall patterns become more variable.

At other Uganda shoebill sites, the main threats are cattle grazing at the swamp margins (reducing papyrus cover that provides structural nest material and nest concealment), papyrus cutting for mat-weaving and craft industries (removing the deep interior papyrus stands that provide the water-protected nest platform locations), and direct human disturbance through fishing or agricultural access into the swamp interior.
