Day-by-Day Structure
Day 1 (Entebbe): Mabamba shoebill canoe (morning) + Botanical Gardens (afternoon grey parrot return). Shoebill achieved on Day 1.
Day 2 (Drive to Kibale via Ziwa): Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary shoebill canoe (secondary) + rhino walk. Drive to Fort Portal. Afternoon: crater lakes drive.
Day 3 (Kibale Forest): 5:30am pre-dawn walk + chimp tracking (8am permit) + Bigodi Wetland afternoon.
Day 4 (Queen Elizabeth): Drive from Kibale (2.5 hours). Kazinga Channel boat trip (afternoon).
Day 5 (Queen Elizabeth): 5:30am Kasenyi game drive + Maramagambo forest. Depart for Bwindi 3pm.
Day 6 (Bwindi Buhoma): Arrive Bwindi. Afternoon: Buhoma forest walk (first endemics). Evening: birding the forest edge.
Day 7 (Bwindi — gorilla trek): 8am gorilla trekking (USD 700 permit). Return to lodge approximately 1pm. Afternoon: Buhoma endemic trail. First gorilla encounter.
Day 8 (Bwindi Ruhija): Drive to Ruhija sector (1.5 hours). Full day: African green broadbill, Chapin's flycatcher, Shelley's crimsonwing, Grauer's rush warbler targeted.
Day 9 (Bwindi Ruhija): Pre-dawn endemic session + second gorilla trek (if 2nd permit) or second full endemic day at Ruhija.

The gorilla trek itself takes place inside the same forest where the endemic species occur — the morning of the gorilla trek is a productive birding walk to and from the gorilla family, during which mountain masked apalis, African green broadbill and regal sunbird are regularly encountered on the trail. The chimp tracking at Kibale on Day 3 similarly takes place inside the forest during the peak birding hours of 7am to 10am, producing both a primate encounter and a forest birding session simultaneously.
The Gorilla Trekking Permit: What to Know
The Uganda mountain gorilla trekking permit costs USD 700 per person and is valid for one hour with the gorilla family group once they are located. The permit must be booked through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or through an accredited tour operator. Permit availability is strictly limited to 8 trackers per gorilla family group per day across the Bwindi habituated families. In peak season (June to August), permits are fully booked 4 to 6 months in advance for the most popular Bwindi sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. For this 10-day itinerary, the gorilla trek is allocated to Day 7 at Bwindi Buhoma sector, after 2 days of approaching forest on the Kibale and Queen Elizabeth circuits.
The Chimpanzee Permit: Kibale Forest Logistics
The chimpanzee habituated tracking permit at Kibale Forest costs USD 150 per person and takes place in two sessions: a dawn session (6am to 8am, the most productive) and a main morning session (8am to 12pm). For maximum species output on Day 3 of this itinerary, the birding pre-dawn walk at Kanyanchu (5:30am to 6:30am) is completed before the chimp tracking permit window opens. The pre-dawn walk is specifically targeted at the green-breasted pitta and African pitta calls that are most audible in the 30 minutes before sunrise — the chimp tracking session follows immediately, using the same forest trail where the pitta species are already active. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary afternoon session (2:30pm to 5:30pm) uses a different community guide from the chimp guide, as Bigodi is managed by the Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental Development (KAFRED) separately from the UWA-managed Kanyanchu site.
Bwindi Endemic Species: Buhoma vs Ruhija
This 10-day itinerary covers both the Bwindi Buhoma sector (Day 6 afternoon and Day 7 gorilla trek day) and the Bwindi Ruhija sector (Days 8 to 9 full endemic sessions). The two sectors are 1.5 hours apart by road but produce different species communities due to an altitude difference of 500 to 800 metres. Bwindi Buhoma (1,450 to 1,600m) holds the lower-altitude Albertine endemics: regal sunbird, African green broadbill (in the Buhoma valley area), mountain masked apalis, Grauer's warbler in the understorey. Bwindi Ruhija (2,000 to 2,200m) holds the upper-altitude endemics: African green broadbill on the Mubwindi Swamp trail, Chapin's flycatcher in the upper forest, Shelley's crimsonwing, Grauer's rush warbler in the valley marshy sections, purple-breasted sunbird on exposed ridge trees, Bwindi warbler. The trade-off is one full Ruhija endemic birding day replaced by a second gorilla encounter.
Is Semuliki included in this 10-day itinerary?
No — Semuliki Forest Reserve is not included in the standard 10-day gorilla and birding itinerary because adding it would either extend the total days to 12 or remove a full day from Bwindi. Semuliki is included in the 14-day big bird itinerary instead, where the Congo basin exclusives at Semuliki can be fully exploited without compressing the endemic birding at Bwindi.
