Shoebill Sites Outside Uganda: Accessibility Comparison
The key alternative shoebill sites outside Uganda: Zambia's Bangweulu Swamp holds 1,000 to 2,000 birds and is accessible by small aircraft from Lusaka to Kasanka National Park. Views are from a motorised flat-bottomed boat at 100 to 300 metres — excellent binoculars but very different from the 10 to 25 metre Mabamba canoe experience. South Sudan's Sudd wetland holds the largest global population (1,500 to 3,000) but is not safely accessible for international birding visitors due to ongoing security conditions. Rwanda's Akagera National Park has 3 to 5 introduced individuals — not a reliable site. Ethiopia's Gambella region has occasional records from the Baro River papyrus zone but is not systematically birded.
