Mixed-species flocks are the most efficient birding mechanism in tropical forest. In Uganda's primary forests at Kibale, Bwindi and Budongo, mixed flocks moving through the understorey and midcanopy concentrate 15 to 40 species in a single moving group, producing rapid identification opportunities that would take hours of solo trail birding to replicate. Understanding how to find flocks, how to position yourself within them and which species lead each flock type is the single most important forest birding skill a Uganda visitor can develop.
Why Flocks Form: The Mutual Benefit
Mixed-species flocks form because each participating species gains a net benefit: the more eyes there are in a group, the greater the collective ability to detect approaching predators (hawks, accipiters) — allowing individual birds to spend more time foraging and less time scanning for danger. Certain "nuclear" species hold the flock together as leaders; the other "attendant" species follow the nuclear species because the nuclear species is the most consistent at finding food concentrations and triggering the alarm response that saves attendant species from predation.
Nuclear Species at Kibale and Bwindi
At Kibale Forest, the primary nuclear species for understorey flocks is the black-and-white shrike-flycatcher — its distinctive rattling call marks an active flock in the understorey from 100 metres distance. The yellow-throated tinkerbird and the little greenbul are secondary nuclear species. At Bwindi, the mountain illadopsis and the brown illadopsis serve as the nuclear species at the lower altitude sectors, with the Ruwenzori batis taking the nuclear role in high-altitude Ruhija flocks. Identifying the nuclear species by sound is the quickest way to locate a flock — learn the nuclear species' calls before arriving and you can walk directly to a flock without needing to see the birds first.
Positioning Within a Flock: The Key Technique
When you locate a mixed-species flock, position yourself in the forest ahead of the flock's direction of travel — the direction the flock is moving. Do not follow the flock from behind, as the species at the back of the flock are distracted from foraging and flush when you approach from behind. Instead, move quietly ahead of the flock (use the nuclear species call to judge direction), find a clearing or gap in the understorey, and wait. The flock will move through your position over 5 to 15 minutes, bringing each species to within 3 to 15 metres for brief but high-quality views.
Species Reliably Found in Kibale Flocks
The core species attending Kibale understorey flocks: grey-chested illadopsis, yellow-streaked greenbul, the green hylia, African shrike-flycatcher, chestnut-capped flycatcher, olivaceous flycatcher, white-tailed crested flycatcher, olive sunbird and the little green sunbird. The forest canopy flock component (higher, moving faster): Stuhlmann's starling, the African blue flycatcher and several species of weavers and estrildid finches at the forest edge. The Ruwenzori batis is particularly reliable in Kibale flocks and is one of the most photogenic small forest species in Uganda. Mixed flocks are also the most reliable context for the African pigmy-kingfisher, which occupies a dry-forest-interior niche and follows flocks through the dense interior understorey.
How Long to Stay With a Flock
A standard Kibale mixed-species flock passes through a given position in 8 to 20 minutes. In that time an experienced birder will identify 15 to 25 species. After the flock passes, the forest is often quiet for 15 to 30 minutes before the next flock arrives. The most productive strategy is to find one productive clearing and wait — following a flock as it moves through the forest means breaking cover repeatedly and flushing the less confiding attendant species. Stationary birding in the path of a flock produces better views and more identifications than pursuing the flock.

Canopy vs Understorey Flocks: The Two Flock Types at Kibale
Kibale Forest has two distinct flock types that operate at different altitudes and move at different speeds. Canopy flocks (20 to 40 metres): dominated by sunbirds, starlings and the larger flycatcher species. Move fast (5 to 10 metres per minute) and are difficult to follow because they are above the closed canopy and require looking straight up. The most productive canopy flock tactic is to find a canopy gap or clearing and wait — the flock will cross the gap repeatedly as it moves through the section. Understorey flocks (0 to 10 metres): the most species-rich and most accessible type. Move slowly (1 to 3 metres per minute), contain a wider species diversity, and allow closer approach because the birds are partly screened by vegetation and feel less exposed.
The Best Mixed-Flock Species: A Birder's Priority List
The species birders most want to find in Uganda forest flocks and which flock association they have: African pygmy-kingfisher (dry forest understorey, follows flocks through interior forest; the most colourful and least expected flock follower), Chapin's flycatcher at Bwindi (reliably found in Ruhija sector flocks — the most sought Bwindi endemic that is otherwise almost impossible to locate), green hylia (small, green, active — one of the most reliable understorey flock attendants at both Kibale and Bwindi), white-tailed crested flycatcher (tail-fanning display in understorey, reliably in Kibale flocks), olive sunbird (follows understorey flocks to exploit the insect disturbance, often the first species in any flock), and the chestnut-capped flycatcher (small russet-capped flycatcher, one of the most reliably seen of Kibale's less common species in flock contexts).
Mixed Flocks and the Green-Breasted Pitta
The green-breasted pitta at Kibale is most reliably found using two techniques: army ant columns and the late-afternoon flock following sessions. In the late afternoon (3pm to 5pm), when the heat of the day has passed and the understorey activity increases again, mixed flocks reform in the primary forest interior. The pitta — which has been roosting in the dense understorey during the hot midday period — begins moving again in association with the understorey flock activity. Recording Flock Species: Photography and eBird Tips
Photographing birds in a fast-moving mixed-species flock is one of the most technically challenging scenarios in Uganda birding. The light is typically low (understorey, filtered through the canopy), the birds are small and fast-moving, and the background (branches, leaves) confuses camera autofocus. Settings recommendations: ISO 3200 to 6400 in the forest understorey, wide aperture (f/4 to f/5.6 on a 100-400mm equivalent), shutter speed 1/500s minimum for most understorey flock species, single-point AF or small-zone AF rather than full-frame tracking (which locks onto the background). eBird tips for flock sessions: record all species seen and heard during the flock encounter as a single stationary checklist from the time you locate the flock to the time it moves beyond detection distance. Species detected by call only during the flock should be included with the annotation "heard only." For eBird list accuracy, mixed-flock species counts should use a minimum estimate rather than a maximum — it is better to record 12 species with confidence than to list 18 with uncertainty.
