This safari pairs Uganda's two most iconic wildlife encounters into a single, efficient trip: the prehistoric Shoebill Stork at Mabamba Swamp, and a full hour face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family in the misty forests of Bwindi — with a Batwa cultural encounter woven in.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Entebbe – Mabamba Swamp – Relaxation
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~45 min each way to Mabamba
Your safari opens before dawn with pickup from your Entebbe hotel around 5:30am and a short drive to Mabamba Bay. You transfer into a dugout canoe with a local poler and guide, gliding quietly through the papyrus channels in the early light — the best window for the Shoebill Stork, alongside African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, and the secretive Papyrus Gonolek.
By late morning you're back in Entebbe with the rest of the day free. Rather than heading straight into a long drive, you get a proper rest — time by the lake, a relaxed lunch, an optional visit to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, or simply recovering from the early start before the road ahead.
Day 2: Entebbe – Bwindi (Buhoma)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~8–10 hrs
After breakfast, you set off southwest — through Masaka, Mbarara, and Ntungamo toward Kihihi and Buhoma — on a route that shifts from lakeside flats to open grassland to the terraced, misty highlands of the Albertine Rift. A packed lunch keeps the journey moving, with a stretch stop along the way. You arrive at your Buhoma lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking – Batwa Cultural Experience
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner • Activity: Full-day trek + afternoon cultural visit
After breakfast, you report to Buhoma park headquarters for briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers before being assigned a gorilla family and heading into the forest. The trek can take two to six hours depending on the family's location, through dense, often steep terrain alive with birdsong and ancient hardwoods. Once located, you're granted a full hour with the gorillas — a silverback's quiet authority, mothers tending their young, juveniles at play.
Rather than resting all afternoon, you head out again — this time to a nearby Batwa community for a guided cultural encounter. The Batwa were Bwindi's original forest inhabitants, resettled outside the park when it became a protected reserve in 1991. Led by Batwa elders, you're taken through demonstrations of traditional forest life: hunting and gathering techniques, fire-making, herbal medicine, and honey-collecting, often followed by traditional song and dance performed by the community. The visit directly supports the resettled community.
You return to your lodge by early evening for a well-earned dinner.
Day 4: Bwindi – Entebbe – Departure
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch • Drive: ~8–10 hrs
An early breakfast and departure from Buhoma, retracing the route north through Kihihi, Ntungamo, Mbarara, and Masaka, with a lunch stop along the way. You arrive back in Entebbe in the evening, transferring directly to the airport for your onward or international flight.
