This all-road circuit takes you through the full range of southwestern Uganda's headline experiences — Shoebill at Mabamba, savannah wildlife at Lake Mburo, mountain gorillas in Bwindi's Buhoma sector, the waterways of Queen Elizabeth, and chimpanzees in Kibale — before looping back to Entebbe. Every leg follows confirmed road routes with realistic drive times, no flights required, and the pacing is built to give you real time in each habitat rather than rushing between highlights.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Entebbe – Mabamba Swamp – Lake Mburo National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~45 min to Mabamba, then ~3–4 hrs to Lake Mburo
Your safari opens well before sunrise, with pickup from your Entebbe hotel around 5:30am. A short 45-minute drive brings you to the shores of Mabamba Bay on Lake Victoria's northern edge, where you transfer into a traditional dugout canoe with a local poler and your guide. Gliding silently through the papyrus channels in the first light of day, you search for the Shoebill Stork — most active and visible in these early hours as it hunts in the shallows. Alongside it, expect African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Lesser Jacana, and the shy Papyrus Gonolek, with Sitatunga antelope sometimes glimpsed moving through the reeds.
After roughly three hours on the water, you return to the landing site for tea and a light breakfast before rejoining your vehicle. The road southwest takes you through Masaka, past small trading centres and rolling farmland, and onto the Kampala–Mbarara highway. You arrive at your Lake Mburo lodge by late afternoon, with time for a Nature Walk with ranger guides watching for zebra and impala, before dinner as the sky darkens over the park's acacia woodland.
Day 2: Lake Mburo – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Buhoma)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~6–7 hrs via Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Kihihi
An early start rewards you with Lake Mburo's best game-viewing window: a guided drive through the park's savannah and acacia woodland in search of zebra, eland, impala, buffalo, and the park's resident vervet and black-and-white colobus monkeys, with over 350 recorded bird species keeping things interesting along the tracks.
By mid-morning you're back on the road for the longest driving day of the safari — southwest via Ntungamo and Rukungiri toward Kihihi, then on to Buhoma. The route carries you through Uganda's terraced, high-altitude farmland: tea estates, banana groves, and steep green hillsides that steadily give way to the misty ridgelines of the Albertine Rift. You'll arrive at your Buhoma lodge in the early evening, with dinner and an early night ahead of trekking day.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Batwa Pygmies Cultural Experience
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner • Activity: Full-day trek, duration variable
After an early breakfast, you report to Buhoma park headquarters for a mandatory briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, covering trekking etiquette, safety around the gorillas, and group assignments. You're then allocated to one of Buhoma's habituated gorilla families and set off into the forest with your ranger guide and, if desired, a porter to help with the terrain.
The trek itself varies enormously — anywhere from two to four hours of hiking through dense, often steep and muddy forest, depending on where the family has ranged that day. Once your guide's advance trackers locate the gorillas, you're given a strict one-hour window in their presence — watching a silverback assert quiet authority over the group, mothers grooming and nursing their young, juveniles wrestling through the undergrowth. Photography is encouraged (no flash), and rangers keep the group at a respectful distance throughout.
You hike back out and return to your lodge by mid-to-late afternoon. After lunch, you visit the Batwa pygmies for an amazing cultural experience, then have the rest of the day free to rest and relive the encounter before dinner.
Day 4: Bwindi – Queen Elizabeth National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~3 hrs via Ishasha
After a relaxed breakfast — with the option of a short birding walk around the lodge grounds — you depart Buhoma and head north via the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, keeping a close eye on the fig trees for Ishasha's famous tree-climbing lions, along with Uganda Kob, buffalo, and savannah birds.
On arrival at your Queen Elizabeth lodge by early afternoon, you settle in before heading out for an afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise — one of Africa's classic wildlife-viewing experiences. The channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and holds one of the highest hippo densities on the continent, alongside elephants coming down to drink, buffalo herds, Nile crocodiles, and dense concentrations of waterbirds.
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth – Kibale Forest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~2–3 hrs via Kasese and Fort Portal
An early game drive across the open Kasenyi plains gives you your best chance at lion, along with kob, buffalo, warthog, and raptors. After breakfast, you continue north via Kasese, with the Rwenzori Mountains — the fabled "Mountains of the Moon" — visible on the horizon on a clear day, and on through Fort Portal, a highland town surrounded by tea plantations and crater lakes.
You arrive at your Kibale-area lodge by early-to-mid afternoon, with the rest of the day free for a relaxed nature walk, birding, or simply resting ahead of the next day's chimp trek.
Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking, Kibale Forest
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner • Activity: Half-day trek
After an early breakfast, you report to Kanyanchu park headquarters for briefing before setting off into Kibale's lowland tropical forest, one of Uganda's richest primate habitats with 13 recorded species. Kibale has the highest chimpanzee-tracking success rate in the country, and the trek — typically two to four hours — often turns up red colobus, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and L'Hoest's monkey along the way, in addition to your target chimpanzee community.
In the afternoon, a guided walk through the neighbouring Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-run reserve bordering the park — adds papyrus swamp and raffia palm forest habitat, home to Papyrus Gonolek, Great Blue Turaco, and eight further primate species, with proceeds directly supporting the local community.
Day 7: Kibale – Crater Lakes – Kampala
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner • Drive: ~30–45 min to crater lakes, then ~5 hrs Fort Portal–Mubende–Kampala
A relaxed morning brings you into the Ndali-Kasenda crater lake field, a landscape of over thirty volcanic lakes scattered across rolling green hills. You take a guided walking tour around one or two of the lakes — Lake Nyinambuga and Lake Nkuruba are among the most scenic — with an easy stop at a viewpoint locally known as "Top of the World" for photographs.
By late morning you're back on the road, passing through Fort Portal for a lunch stop before continuing northeast via Mubende toward Kampala. You arrive in Kampala by early evening, checking into your hotel with the evening free for dinner and rest.
Day 8: Kampala Buganda Heritage Tour – Entebbe – Departure
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch • Activity: Guided cultural tour • Drive: ~1 hr Kampala–Entebbe
Your final day shifts from wildlife to culture. A guided half-day tour takes you through the heart of the Buganda Kingdom's history — starting at the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and burial ground of Buganda's kings, then on to the Buganda Kingdom Palace (Lubiri) at Mengo. A stop at a local craft market rounds out the morning.
After lunch in Kampala, you transfer south to Entebbe (roughly one hour), arriving with time to spare before your onward or international flight departure.
