Mabamba Swamp Birding Guide: Uganda's Top Wetland Site

Mabamba Swamp Birding Guide

Mabamba Swamp on the northern shore of Lake Victoria is Uganda's top wetland birding site and the most reliable place on earth to see the shoebill stork. Located just 45 minutes from Entebbe Airport, it is the first stop on virtually every Uganda birding itinerary. This guide covers how to get there, what to expect and which species to target.

Getting to Mabamba

From Entebbe, take the Kampala road and turn off at Kasanje then follow signs to Mabamba landing site (approx 45 minutes). From Kampala, allow 90 minutes. The road to the swamp is murram (dirt) for the last 5km and passable in all seasons with a normal vehicle. Canoe hire is arranged at the landing site — we recommend pre-booking a local guide through us to ensure an experienced bird-finder.

What to Expect on the Canoe

Local dugout canoes are paddled silently through narrow papyrus channels. The guide poles or paddles quietly to shoebill territories known from daily observation. Most visitors encounter 1 to 3 shoebills per session. Beyond the shoebill: papyrus gonolek, white-winged warbler, African jacana, blue-breasted bee-eater, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher, African pygmy goose, long-tailed cormorant, sitatunga antelope and 40+ wetland species are typical.

Best Time of Day

Depart by 6:00am for the best light and most active shoebill behaviour. The bird tends to rest in dense papyrus during the midday heat. A morning session (6:00am to 10:00am) is the most productive. Afternoon sessions (4:00pm to 6:00pm) are the second-best option and offer good photographic light. Avoid midday visits.
