The post-hatching care period, during which the chick grows from helpless down-covered hatchling to independently flying juvenile, extends through February and March. This means that from November through February, any shoebill at a breeding site is operating under the greatest energy demands of its entire annual cycle.

The breeding season timing is linked directly to the short dry season that begins in December in Uganda. By the time chicks are hatching and requiring large daily prey deliveries, water levels in papyrus swamps are receding slightly — concentrating lungfish into shallower margins and making them more accessible to hunting adults. The biology of shoebill, lungfish and papyrus habitat is tightly interlocked.

Where Shoebills Build Their Nests at Mabamba

Shoebill nests are built in the deepest part of the papyrus swamp, in areas where between 40 centimetres and 1 metre of water stands year-round. The nest platform is a wide, flat, trampled structure of papyrus stems, aquatic grasses and organic debris, typically 1.2 to 1.8 metres across and raised 10 to 30 centimetres above the waterline. It is substantial enough to support both adult birds simultaneously.

At Mabamba, active nests are located in the non-navigable interior section of the swamp, well away from the main canoe channels. At Murchison Falls, shoebill nest sites have been recorded along the vegetated margins of the Victoria Nile between Paraa and the Lake Albert delta. These nests are less studied than those at Mabamba because access requires long boat trips and the nests are harder to monitor systematically. Queen Elizabeth National Park's Kazinga Channel margin also holds at least one regular nest territory.

Egg Laying, Incubation and the Water-Cooling Behaviour

The shoebill lays one to three eggs per breeding attempt. A clutch of two is most common; three eggs are recorded but rare. The eggs are white to off-white, slightly oval and large — approximately 90 millimetres long and 60 millimetres wide, reflecting the size of the bird.

Both parents incubate. Incubation lasts approximately 30 days from the laying of the last egg. Shift changeovers are accompanied by brief bill-clattering greeting ceremonies. The on-duty bird holds the nest position while the off-duty bird hunts in the adjacent swamp zone, typically within 300 to 500 metres of the nest.

During hot weather — which in Uganda's short dry season means temperatures above 30°C at midday — the on-duty adult uses its bill to transport water from adjacent swamp channels and pour it directly over the eggs. This thermoregulatory water-cooling behaviour is one of the most extraordinary documented at shoebill nests. It has been photographed at Mabamba during December monitoring sessions and is most reliably observed between 11am and 2pm when ambient temperatures peak. The bird must make multiple water-transport trips if temperatures remain high, as the nest platform dries quickly in direct sun.

Hatching success varies. Studies from the Bangweulu Swamps in Zambia recorded 50 to 60% of eggs successfully hatching in undisturbed conditions. The main causes of egg loss are flooding events that raise swamp water levels above the nest platform, egg predation by monitor lizards and water mongooses, and egg cooling during extended periods when both adults leave the nest simultaneously.

Shoebill Chick Development Week by Week

A shoebill chick at hatching is altricial: completely helpless, eyes closed, covered in pale grey-white down and unable to thermoregulate. It weighs approximately 150 to 200 grams. Without continuous brooding by one parent it would die within hours — equatorial midday sun can overheat an unshaded nest as readily as a cool night can chill a hatchling.

Week one: The chick lies flat, unable to raise its head independently. The parent tears lungfish into pieces and delivers them directly into the open bill. Eye-opening begins at day 5 to 7. The chick's feet are disproportionately large even at this early stage.

Weeks two to three: The chick can hold its head up and begins producing bill-clattering sounds — the first expression of what will become its primary adult communication. The distinctive hooked bill tip is already visible. One parent remains on or touching the nest at all times.

Weeks four to six: Pin feathers emerge, giving the chick a spiky appearance. It can stand and move around the nest platform. The parent delivers whole small lungfish rather than torn pieces. Chick weight has increased to 1 to 2 kilograms.

Weeks seven to ten: Grey juvenile plumage replaces down. The bill has reached approximately 60% of adult size. Both parents now routinely leave the nest to hunt simultaneously. The chick begins flapping its wings extensively and making short hops along the nest edge.

Weeks twelve to sixteen: The fledgling makes its first short flights from the nest platform into adjacent papyrus. Parents begin reducing food delivery, forcing the young bird to associate movement with finding food. Full independence is typically achieved four to five months after hatching.

When two chicks hatch, the older, stronger chick almost always monopolises food delivery and outcompetes its sibling. Siblicide — the death of the younger chick through food competition — is documented in shoebills and is considered a natural mechanism for ensuring at least one chick is successfully reared even when prey is scarce.

Parent Behaviour During the Shoebill Breeding Season

Shoebill adults during the breeding season display coordinated behaviour that shifts across the cycle. During incubation, shifts at the nest are roughly balanced between male and female. Once chicks hatch and demand daily large prey deliveries, the male typically takes longer hunting excursions into deeper swamp zones while the female guards the nest area. At Mabamba, the guides note that the female is almost always the bird visible near the nest when a canoe approaches in November to January, while the male is heard bill-clattering from 200 to 400 metres away.

Territorial aggression intensifies during the breeding season. Intruding shoebills — usually dispersing juveniles from previous years rather than rival breeding adults — are driven away with sustained pursuit, wing-spreading displays and continuous bill-clattering. Our guides have observed a Mabamba adult pursue an intruding juvenile for over 150 metres through open papyrus channels before returning to the nest territory.

When a monitor lizard or other ground predator approaches a nest, the attending shoebill performs a distraction display: walking deliberately away from the nest while dragging one wing along the swamp surface to mimic an injured bird. This draws the predator away from the eggs or chick. At Mabamba, this behaviour was documented in December 2023 when a large water monitor was detected approaching an active nest territory.

Visiting Mabamba During the Shoebill Breeding Season

A visit to Mabamba during the breeding season is not only acceptable — it is one of the most rewarding times to come. Adult shoebills are more vocal, more active and often more visible during October to February than at other times of year, because their need to hunt larger quantities of prey means they spend more time at accessible papyrus margins. Our sighting success rate during the breeding season is no lower than our annual average of 95%.

The community guides apply stricter approach protocols during the breeding season. Known nest territories receive a 100-metre canoe exclusion zone, compared to the standard 40-metre minimum for non-breeding territories. Any adult showing agitation — exaggerated walking, repeated wing-raising or sustained bill-clattering directed toward the canoe — is the signal to stop and not approach further. Our guides enforce this without negotiation. The long-term health of Mabamba's shoebill breeding population always takes priority over any individual visitor's preference for a closer view.
