Observers often assume it is sleeping or simply standing. It is not. Every slight movement on the water surface is being processed.
When the shoebill detects prey within range — typically 0.5 to 1.5 metres — it launches forward in a sudden, violent forward lunge, throwing its entire body weight onto the prey. The wings spread for balance and the bill plunges into the water. This is not a dainty peck. It is a full-body collapse that drives the bill through mud and vegetation to catch fish trying to flee. Frogs and toads: Large frogs — particularly the African bullfrog and various reed frogs — are taken when encountered at the papyrus surface. Frogs are easier to catch than lungfish but are smaller prey and less energetically rewarding.
